Overview:
ACH
returns remain one of the most confusing and operationally sensitive areas of
ACH processing. For many financial institutions, the challenge is not simply
knowing that a return can be made, but understanding exactly what type of
return applies, what documentation is required, and whether the item falls
within the applicable timeframe. Questions around general returns, unauthorized
returns, stop payments, revoked authorizations, dishonored returns, and
corrected dishonored returns often create uncertainty for both frontline staff
and operations teams.
That
confusion becomes very real in day-to-day account-holder interactions. A
customer may say, “I didn’t authorize this,” “I want this stopped,” “I revoked
permission,” or “Why did this payment post again?” While those statements may
sound similar, they can trigger very different ACH return paths, forms, and
deadlines under the Nacha Operating Rules. When staff are unclear on what
questions to ask or which form to use, the risk of processing errors, delays,
and noncompliance increases. Nacha’s framework around unauthorized returns,
WSUD handling, and the distinction between return reasons such as R10 and R11
makes that decision-making especially important.
This
two-hour webinar is designed to bring structure and clarity to the ACH return
process from start to finish. The session will walk through the full return
lifecycle, including general returns, extended returns, dishonored returns, and
contested and corrected dishonored returns, while also explaining the most
commonly used return reason codes and their associated timing requirements.
Through practical examples and realistic account-holder scenarios, attendees
will gain a clearer understanding of when to treat an entry as a stop payment,
when a Written Statement of Unauthorized Debit is required, when authorization
has been revoked, and how to respond appropriately while remaining compliant
with the Nacha Operating Rules.
Particular
emphasis will be placed on the questions that customer service representatives,
frontline personnel, and operations staff face every day: What does the account
holder actually want done? Is this a stop payment or an unauthorized debit
claim? Is a WSUD required? Which return reason code applies? What is the
deadline? By answering those questions in a practical, scenario-based format,
this webinar will help staff make better decisions, use the correct forms, and
process ACH returns more confidently and consistently.
Areas
covered in the session:

the Rules surrounding Stop Payments
- Identify
the difference in the Rules between a consumer and non-consumer Stop Payment

Why
should you attend?
You
should attend this webinar if ACH returns are part of your day-to-day
responsibility and you want greater confidence in handling them correctly under
the Nacha Operating Rules. Returns are not just about selecting a code—they
require careful judgment around timing, documentation, exception handling, and
the difference between situations that may appear similar but must be processed
differently.
For
ACH professionals, the real challenge is often in the gray areas: determining
whether an entry should be handled as a stop payment, unauthorized debit, or
revoked authorization; knowing when a WSUD is required; and understanding how
return deadlines affect available options. This session is designed to help you
navigate those decision points more clearly through practical explanation and
scenario-based discussion.
You
should also attend if you want to strengthen processing accuracy, reduce
compliance risk, and support more consistent handling across your ACH or
deposit operations team. Whether you are reviewing returns yourself or guiding
staff who do, this webinar will help reinforce the operational knowledge needed
to manage ACH returns with greater precision and control.
Who
will benefit?
This
webinar will benefit professionals who are directly responsible for handling
ACH returns, stop payments, unauthorized debit claims, return reason code
decisions, and related account-holder support. It is especially relevant for
those who must apply Nacha Rules correctly, manage documentation, and respond
within required return timeframes—those include
