Overview
Payroll
systems can process thousands of calculations quickly and consistently—but
consistency does not necessarily mean the calculation is correct. A system
configured with the wrong overtime rule, deduction treatment, tax setting,
garnishment limit, or earning code can produce an incorrect paycheck that looks
completely normal. And once that error is built into the system, it can be
repeated across employees and pay periods before anyone realizes something is
wrong.
Recent
wage-and-hour enforcement illustrates the risk. Employers continue to face
significant back-pay exposure over issues such as regular-rate and overtime
calculations—areas where one incorrect payroll treatment can affect hundreds or
even thousands of paychecks. At the same time, payroll teams are dealing with
updated withholding requirements, Form W-4 changes, changing tax limits,
different treatment of pre-tax and after-tax deductions, garnishment orders,
tax levies, child support limits, and continuing developments involving
student-loan collections.
This
creates an important question for every payroll professional: If the system
produces a number, can you independently determine whether that number is
right?
Payroll
technology performs the calculation it has been configured to perform. Payroll
professionals still need to understand what should happen behind that
calculation. When a new earning code, benefit deduction, tax change,
garnishment order, or system enhancement is introduced, someone needs to be
able to calculate the expected result, compare it with the system output,
recognize a discrepancy, and determine where the problem occurred.
This
session will take participants through the calculations and federal rules
behind the gross-to-net paycheck. Attendees will examine overtime and the
regular rate of pay, minimum wage and tipped employees, pre-tax and after-tax
deductions, Section 125 deductions, garnishments and child support limits, tax
levies, student-loan considerations, Form W-4, federal income tax withholding,
and FICA calculations.
Participants
will leave with more than an understanding of payroll math. Drawing on Dayna’s
more than 17 years of hands-on payroll experience, current payroll operations
leadership, and extensive experience teaching payroll professionals, they will
have the foundation needed to test payroll-system functionality, investigate
questionable results, validate system calculations, and know when a paycheck
deserves a closer look rather than simply accepting the number the system
produces.

Why
Should You Attend?
Payroll
systems can automate complex calculations, but they cannot replace the payroll
professional’s ability to recognize when something is wrong. This session will
help you understand the calculations behind the system so you can verify
results instead of relying solely on automated output.
You
will gain practical insight into overtime, regular rate of pay, deductions,
garnishments, tax levies, Form W-4, federal withholding, FICA, and other
elements that affect gross-to-net pay—giving you a stronger foundation for
testing system changes and investigating questionable pay results.
With
Dayna’s hands-on payroll operations experience guiding the session, you will
learn how these rules and calculations apply in real payroll situations and
leave better prepared to identify errors before they affect employees, create
compliance issues, or multiply across multiple pay periods.
